Kerry in Jordan for new round of Mideast diplomacy

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry launched a new round of Middle East diplomacy on Tuesday but crises in Egypt and Syria threatened to overshadow his bid to restart stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

On his sixth trip to the region in as many months as America's top diplomat, Kerry traveled to Amman to see Arab foreign ministers and update them on his efforts to get the Israelis and Palestinians back to the negotiating table. However, unlike his previous visits, he had no plans to travel to Israel or the Palestinian Authority and U.S. officials dampened expectations that there would be any kind of breakthrough or announcement on resuming direct talks.

Kerry was meeting on Tuesday with Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh and then having a private one-on-one dinner with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, who has a home in Amman. On Wednesday in the Jordanian capital, Kerry is to see the foreign ministers of Arab League nations that support a comprehensive Arab-Israeli peace plan first proposed by Saudi Arabia as well as Jordan's King Abdullah.

Kerry has spent hours with Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu trying to set the stage for a return to peace talks that foundered and collapsed in 2008. Kerry insists that progress has been made but there have been few, if any, discernible signs that the two sides are getting closer to agreeing to discuss the major issues that divide them.

In addition to briefing the Arab ministers on the Israeli-Palestinian front, Kerry will also be talking with them about the latest developments in Egypt since the military ouster of the country's first democratically elected president and deteriorating conditions in Syria, where opposition forces appear to be losing ground to President Bashar Assad's regime.

Kerry is due to return to the U.S. on Thursday.

(AP) ? Yoenis Cespedes certainly made his mark at the All-Star game ? and he's not even on the roster.

Actually, it was a dent.

Oakland's second-year slugger won baseball's Home Run Derby with a dazzling display of power Monday night, becoming the first player left out of the Midsummer Classic to take home the crown.

Cespedes beat Bryce Harper 9-8 in the final round at reconfigured Citi Field, hitting the decisive drive with five swings to spare. The outfielder from Cuba flipped his bat aside and raised his left arm in triumph when he sent his 32nd homer of the night some 455 feet to center field, where it caromed off the back wall of the black batter's eye.

He was swarmed by the American League All-Stars near the third base line.

"You come for a show in New York. He put on a show," said Detroit Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer, set to start for the AL on Tuesday night.

The final addition to the field, Cespedes was the fourth player not selected for the All-Star game to compete in the event.

Right off the bat, he proved he belonged. With family in the stands, Cespedes hit a whopping 17 home runs in the first round ? more than any other player managed in their first two trips to the plate.

"I felt that I was getting into a very good rhythm, and that as long as the ball was right over the plate, I felt like I was in a good groove," he said through a translator. "That was the key."

Baseball's big boppers took aim at two trucks parked beside the home run apple behind the center-field fence, a popular staple at Mets games dating to their days in Shea Stadium.

With a shiny prize to shoot for, Cespedes dinged the hood on one and elicited a rousing cheer.

Cuban reliever Aroldis Chapman of the Cincinnati Reds brought Cespedes water and a towel during the first round, and 2010 champion David Ortiz strolled over to offer encouragement and advice.

The Rockettes danced atop the dugouts and did their famous kickline between first-round batters.

"It's far different from in Cuba," Cespedes said. "There might be two people at our games. There's only one photographer, and this is completely different and foreign to me. But I'm very happy to be here."

His first-round outburst was enough to send him straight into the finals, though he added six long balls in round two for good measure. Some of his drives were especially impressive, too.

Cespedes hit about a half-dozen balls into the upper deck in left, never reached by anyone in a game, and banged another couple of shots off the restaurant windows in the corner just below.

The 27-year-old Cespedes has struggled as a sophomore, batting .225 with 15 home runs, but hardly anyone in the game doubts his ability.

"This trophy will motivate me so that things continue to go well for me, and I just want to thank the people that believed in me, that thought I could play at this level," he said.

The 20-year-old Harper, wearing shiny gold spikes as his father pitched to him, hammered eight homers in all three rounds. But the Washington Nationals phenom couldn't keep up with Cespedes.

"He's incredible," Harper said. "He's an absolute machine."

Colorado outfielder Michael Cuddyer and Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis, who leads the majors with 37 homers, were eliminated in the second round. Davis tied Reggie Jackson (1969) for the AL record before the All-Star break.

"I had a little blister come up second round. It's just one of those things," Davis said. "I usually get one once a year and it just happened to be tonight. It actually popped during a swing. My main concern is obviously not to hurt myself and to hang onto the bat.

"It's something that I've dealt with in my career since I can remember. You've just got to kind of wear it for a couple of days and then it hardens up and you're good to go."

Citi Field opened in 2009 with a cavernous outfield and yielded the fewest home runs in the majors over its first three seasons, according to STATS. But the Mets erected a new fence in front of the old one, dubbed the Great Wall of Flushing, before last season. That trimmed dimensions by up to 12 feet and lowered the height of the wall from as high as 16 feet to 8 all around.

Since then, the ballpark has ranked closer to the middle of the pack in home runs, 18th out of 30. But it's still no hitter's haven. In fact, hometown favorite David Wright had joked he would take his Derby swings from second base.

Cespedes, however, and most of the other sluggers had little trouble clearing the old wall. When they got good wood, it was long gone.

"This stadium may be very difficult, but it's not as difficult as Oakland. And if I can do it in Oakland, I thought, why can't I do it here?" Cespedes said.

Wright and another hometown darling, Pirates slugger Pedro Alvarez, were both eliminated in the first round. Alvarez went to high school in New York City and grew up in the same Manhattan neighborhood as Manny Ramirez.

Wright managed five home runs as the sellout crowd of 43,558 chanted "Let's Go Mets!"

"I ran out of gas," he said.

Also knocked out early were defending champion Prince Fielder, the only player besides Ken Griffey Jr. to win multiple times, and American League captain Robinson Cano of the New York Yankees, who made Cespedes his final pick.

NOTES: Cespedes' home run total matched Ortiz (2010) and Cano (2011) for the third-highest behind Bobby Abreu (41 in 2005) and Josh Hamilton (35 in 2008). ... Davis was credited with the longest drive of the night at 502 feet. ... Oakland third base coach Mike Gallego pitched to Cespedes, who averaged 405 feet on his home runs. He became the first A's player to participate in the Derby since Jason Giambi in 2001 and joined Mark McGwire (1992) as the team's only winners. "Before I left, they asked me to bring home the trophy," Cespedes said. ... The American League topped the NL 53-50. ... Cano showed up at the afternoon news conference in a snappy suit. Harper was in a T-shirt, mesh shorts, sneakers and his spiky mohawk. At least he was dressed in blue and orange, Mets colors. ... By hitting 103 home runs in all, the sluggers raised $529,000 for charity.

Baidu Buys $1.9 Billion App Developer In China's Biggest Internet Company Purchase Ever

Robin Li Baidu

REUTERS/Jason Lee

The company, China's answer to Google, has agreed to buy out 91 Wireless, which develops apps for Android phones as well as running its own app store.

The deal marks an aggressive investment into mobile from Baidu, in what is now the world's largest smartphone market. The Nasdaq-listed company dominates web searches in China but is seen as needing to branch out into mobile to continue to grow, as users increasingly access the internet from smartphones.

The price paid is unprecedented for an internet company in China, underlining the strength of the country's rapidly growing technology sector. 213m smartphones were sold in China last year, and 78m were shipped in the first quarter of 2013 alone - a 117% rise - according to research from IDC.

91 Wireless is majority owned by NetDragon Websoft, the Hong Kong listed firm. The company said today it had accepted a $1.09bn bid for its 57pc stake. Baidu has offered the same terms to 91 Wireless's other shareholders.

The millions of Android smartphones in China are not connected to Google's Play Store, leaving other providers to plug the gap. More than 10bn apps have been downloaded from 91 Wireless's platforms, Baidu said in a statement today.

Baidu was the first company to float on New York's Nasdaq index in 2007, and is now valued at $35.5bn. It has cashed in on Google's partial withdrawal from China in 2010, when the web giant clashed with authorities over censorship. However, the company is seeing competition hot up, with internet rivals such as Alibaba and Tencent also investing heavily.

The Myth of Marco Rubio?s Immigration Problem

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is losing altitude with some conservatives because he?s the Republican face of immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. Yet he?ll have a lot of company in the 2016 field if he runs for the GOP presidential nomination.

In fact almost every Republican weighing a 2016 race?from Jeb Bush and Chris Christie to Paul Ryan and Bobby Jindal?favors some path to citizenship like the one in the comprehensive reform bill passed by the Senate, or is open to a variation of it.

?Any Republican with a national perspective understands the dynamics of the politics of the 21st?century,? says GOP pollster Whit Ayres, a Rubio adviser. That is, the Hispanic share of the electorate is rising fast, and the GOP share of Hispanic votes keeps falling.

You wouldn?t think it given the resistance of the Republican-run House, but many polls show that most Republicans favor comprehensive reform that includes a path to citizenship, as long as it includes fines, waiting periods, and other conditions that amount to what Ayres calls ?penance? for being in the United States illegally.

Most polls over the past few years find one-quarter to one-third of Republicans will never support citizenship for illegal immigrants regardless of the state of security on the border or the conditions attached, Ayres says. By contrast, just in the last few days,?a poll of 1,000 Republican primary voters?for a pro-reform GOP group called Americans for a Conservative Direction found 65 percent favor a path to citizenship in combination with "substantially increased border security." A?June 13-July 5 Gallup poll?of 4,373 people showed that 83 percent of non-Hispanic white conservatives favor "allowing illegal immigrants to have the opportunity to become citizens."

While one poll?a?June 28-July 8 Quinnipiac poll?of 2,014 people released Friday?found somewhat less GOP support, it still showed 54 percent of Republicans backed either allowing eventual citizenship or allowing people to stay in the United States legally.

The evolution of public opinion and a dire political need for the GOP to start digging out of the hole it?s in with Hispanic and Asian voters are two of the reasons many Republicans with national ambitions are not shying away from citizenship and legalization issues.

Rubio brokered the Senate bill as part of the Gang of Eight, and Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the 2012 GOP vice presidential nominee,?is trying to work out a compromise?in the House. Wisconsin Gov.?Scott Walker?has expressed support for a path to citizenship as has Louisiana Gov.?Bobby Jindal, though Jindal opposed the Senate bill for other reasons.?Christie, New Jersey? popular governor, supported a citizenship path?in 2010, before it was popular in his party. Sen. Jeff Chiesa, the close associate Christie named to fill the seat when Democrat Frank Lautenberg died, voted for the Senate bill.

Florida?s former governor, Jeb?Bush,?has said he is open to a path to citizenship or legal status for undocumented immigrants while Texas Gov.?Perry?and Kentucky?s?Paul?also are open to what the senator calls ?normalizing their status,? depending on the state of border security.

Among the most hardline of the 2016 prospects is Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who has introduced amendments blocking a path to citizenship, calling it unfair to those who waited in line to arrive legally. Former Sen. Rick Santorum, a 2012 aspirant who says he is ?very open? to a 2016 race,?told radio host Andrea Tantaro?last month that there will be ?consequences? in the primaries for Rubio. He says the attitude among some Washington Republicans seems to be that ?the rule of law isn't that important,? that people who came to the United States illegally will be treated the same as those who came legally.

While there are indications that Rubio?s role in the immigration debate?isn?t helping him?among Republicans, it?s way too early for polls to be relevant and in any case the damage for now appears minimal. For instance, a?Rasmussen Reports automated poll in June?found that Rubio?s favorability rating among Republicans nationally had dropped 15 points since February?but it is still at 58 percent.

Opposition to immigration reform, particularly from the tea party wing of the GOP, is intense and vociferous but also misleading, given that two-thirds of Republicans support a path to citizenship if there are strict conditions that go along with it. House members, says Ayres, are ?reacting to what they hear from people who take the time to write, call and email their offices. There aren?t any Republicans that are going to write their congressman demanding a path to citizenship. It?s not the kind of thing that makes you charge the ramparts.?

Sal Russo, a Sacramento-based former Ronald Reagan aide who is co-founder and chief strategist of the Tea Party Express, says those who oppose a path to citizenship are fired up now and determined that undocumented immigrants should not be rewarded for violating the law. ?It?s an important principle, but of course, politics is about the realities of things,? Russo says. ?It?s a difficult thing for some people to swallow, but at the end of the day people think we have to fix the immigration system.?

Russo himself takes the long view, having been around in 1978, when Reagan opposed a ban on gay teachers in California, and 1994, when Jack Kemp opposed Proposition 187 denying social services to illegal immigrants. People predicted conservatives would never support either of them again?"so silly," he says. He predicts the citizenship controversy "won't be a material factor" in 2016, especially if Congress takes immigration off the table by passing something, however imperfect.

Certainly hard-line candidates will hold appeal to some GOP primary voters. Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, a think tank that seeks to limit immigration, sees Cruz as "the obvious person" to fill that niche. "The fact that most of the other 2016 prospects are for either the Senate bill or something like it creates an opportunity for Cruz to differentiate himself," he says.

But after two terms of President Obama, many Republicans will be looking for a general-election winner. Support of comprehensive immigration reform, including a path to citizenship, could well evolve into a proxy for inclusiveness, compassion, and the broad appeal that could finally put the party back in the White House.

(AP) ? Max Scherzer finally lost Saturday night in his final start before the All-Star break, but that rough outing did little to detract from what the Detroit right-hander has accomplished over the last year.

On a staff that includes former MVP Justin Verlander, Scherzer has earned the most attention lately. At 28, he's in the prime of his career, and whether he starts Tuesday's All-Star game or not, he's a big reason why the Tigers are again leading the AL Central.

Since the All-Star break in 2012, Scherzer is 21-3 with a 2.99 ERA in 34 starts. His 13-1 mark this year helped him emerge as perhaps the favorite to start the All-Star game at Citi Field in New York.

Obama honors George H.W. Bush for promoting volunteerism

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Monday saluted former President George H.W. Bush for more than two decades of efforts to push volunteerism and national service, as the Bush family patriarch sat smiling in a wheelchair at a ceremony in the White House.

The 89-year-old Bush used the phrase "a thousand points of light" in his 1988 Republican presidential nomination speech to praise the work of volunteer organizations and came back to the theme in his 1989 inaugural address and other speeches.

Bush established the "Daily Point of Light" award during his one-term presidency to recognize and promote volunteer work.

"I suspect it's harder for you to see something that's clear to everybody else around you, and that's how bright a light you shine - how your vision and example have illuminated the path for so many others, how your love of service has kindled a similar love in the hearts of millions," Obama told Bush.

Bush, who was hospitalized for about two months in late 2012 and early 2013, was rolled onto the podium to sustained applause from former aides, friends, lawmakers, volunteers and representatives of the business community.

The current and former president presented the 5,000th "Daily Point of Light" award to an Iowa couple, Floyd Hammer and Kathy Hamilton, who are the founders of a nonprofit that has delivered more than 200 million free meals to children in the United States and around the world.

Bush and his wife, Barbara, had lunch with the Obamas at the White House before the event.

"It's like coming home for Barbara and me with the rest of you, just coming to this magnificent house and being greeted by this superb hospitality," the former president said during the ceremony.

Obama also announced the creation of a new task force that will identify ways to expand national service and volunteerism in conjunction with government agencies and to enlist private sector support for national service.

In the past year, the government has created volunteer groups that work with the Federal Emergency Management Agency on disaster response and with the Education Department to improve school performance, the White House said.

Obama and Bush were last together in April at the dedication of the presidential library of Bush's son, former President George W. Bush.

Malawi Law Society (MLS) has added its voice on the revelations that former president the late Bingu wa Mutharika accumulated about K61 billion (about $152m) wealth, saying the deceased estate may have been overblown.

According to published report, MLS secretary Felisah Kilembe said Mutharika had put some of the property under several trusts some of which are public trusts that are for the benefit of Malawians.

?According to the law what this means is that the property was disposed of inter vivos [while he was still alive] and could not therefore have been disposed of again at death, as it became the trusts? property the minute it was given to the trust. As such all the property that is under the trust does not form part of the deceased estate?, Kilembe is quoted in the press on Monday.

Kilembe:Property under trusts cannot form part of deceased estate

Kilembe:Property under trusts cannot form part of deceased estate

She explained that ?all properties under the Trusts does not form part of the deceased estate.?

But said late Mutharika?s other properties can still be investigated if there is suspsicion of wrongful- enrichment.

She called for strengthening of the Declaration of Assets law in the country.

Nyasa Times reported earlier that British High Commissioner Michael Nevin ?said Mutharika?s wealth should be a wake-up call for the country to close any gaps in the fight against corruption.

Nevin said the country needs to strengthen its institutions involved in fighting corruption and tighten relevant laws to stop corruption and illegal accumulation of wealth.

?We really need to strengthen a lot of institutions, strengthen the laws and strengthen the ability to prevent such things from happening,? in an interview on Friday on the sidelines of an Extraordinary Annual Youth Consultative Forum (YCF)in Lilongwe.

Meanwhile, the Mutharika family is fighting in court with government which has since frozen all but one bank account of the former president in the case where it is demanding K5 billion in unpaid estate duty from Mutharika?s deceased estate, estimated to be worth about K61 billion.

On the other hand, former first lady Callista Mutharika has agreed with her step daughters Duwa and Tapiwa to appoint new administrators of the controversial estate.

Callista, who does not appear on the ?last will? left by the late president, filed an application in the High Court to remove Duwa and Tapiwa as administrators of the estate.

CONNIE MACK CITY TOURNAMENT; Rain forces postponement of Naa'taanii-Strike Zone Baseball game

Naa'taanii head coach Tim Campos, right, meets with umpire Dave Toledo as Friday's game with Strike Zone Baseball was postponed. (Jon Austria/The Daily Times)

FARMINGTON???Naa'taanii was out to the start it had been dreaming of for years against Strike Zone Baseball in the Connie Mack City Tournament on Friday night.

Then the game was postponed.

With Naa'taanii leading Strike Zone 3-0 after one complete inning of play, wet conditions from a rainstorm brought the game to a pause as umpires waited for grounds crew workers to find a key to unlock a shed with drying solution.

And after a nearly 30-minute delay, the umpires postponed the game to noon today.

"It is a little frustrating, but I am not going to call out anybody publicly," said Naa'taanii head coach Tim Campos. "It is just a break for (Strike Zone). We had a three-run lead, and I felt like we were ready to go. But, hey, we have a three-run lead, and we have to come out and regroup and continue to hit the ball."

Strike Zone head coach Adam Morrissey said the umpires made the decision in the interest of player safety, especially to the pitchers on the slippery mound.

"They didn't have any Quick Dry to fix up the field or anything, so we will just turn around at noon and get it going," Morrissey said. "It is good and bad, I guess. We will see how it goes."

Naa'taanii badly wanted to continue playing. Every player was up on the dugout rail embracing the weather.

"That is our team. This team is excitable. This tournament is extremely important to them. They are on a mission this year, and I just hope nothing gets in the way," Campos said.

The Naa'taanii and Strike Zone match up has become the biggest rivalry in the Connie Mack City Tournament in recent years, and no game seems to happen without incident, whether it is about rulings

on the field or the weather.

"It is always some type of event. Every time. We have to roll with the punches and thank God for the graces he gives you and make it work," Campos said.

Strike Zone starting pitcher Jacy Cave recorded two quick outs in the top of the first inning. With a runner on second base and two outs, Naa'taanii's Nick DeArmond hit a ground ball to Strike Zone second baseman Jeremy Johnson. Johnson bobbled the ball initially and then overthrew the first baseman, allowing Naa'taanii's Roman Gonsalez to score from second.

With the inning still alive, Terrance Barela drove a double to the outfield to score DeArmond.

Cave then hit James Cordova with a pitch and walked Marvin Ortiz to load the bases, and Ryan Barreras drew another walk to bring in Barela, giving Naa'taanii its 3-0 lead.

"You can't do anything about the rain. It is going to happen and mistakes will happen," Cave said. "We just need to refocus on the whole new task at hand now."

Cave said he will be ready to pitch at noon today, but Campos said he expects Strike Zone to turn the ball over to ace Ian Doughty with the extra day of rest.

"They can throw someone else at us. They can sit back and refocus, and this is unfortunate," Campos said. "But, at the same time, we still have to come out and play hard. There is a lot of baseball left."

Both teams will now have to play two games today. Naa'taanii will face 4-Corners in the final four and Strike Zone will face the Rivercats.

The winner of the noon game won't play until 8 p.m. and the loser must play at 5:30 p.m.

"We will take a lot and see what else we have and how we realign because obviously we will have two games now. We have to adjust for that and see how it goes," Campos said.

Woman finds severed animal heads in basket left at Big Cottonwood Canyon

A woman spending time near a fishing pond in Big Cottonwood Canyon made a grisly discovery ? a basket filled with severed animal heads.

Unified police Detective Jared Richardson said police received a call from the woman late Thursday or early Friday about the discovery.

He said the woman told police she had found about six goat heads and six chicken heads inside a basket.

Next to the basket was a bag that the woman believed likely contained the animal carcasses.

"But [she] was too scared to look in that bag," Richardson said.

He said the incident may have been a case of animal sacrifice, but performing the sacrifice and leaving the carcasses so close to water risks contaminating the area?s watershed, which is a crime.

In addition, when people leave the severed heads in the open, Richardson said it is disturbing for individuals, particularly children, who might accidentally stumble upon them.

Tribune to acquire 19 TV stations for $2.73B

CHICAGO (AP) ? Tribune Co. said Monday that it reached a deal to buy Local TV Holdings LLC's 19 TV stations for $2.73 billion in cash, significantly boosting its television business as it looks to sell its newspaper operations.

Tribune currently owns 23 TV stations and cable network WGN America, along with the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times and other newspapers. The deal will give it 42 stations, making the Chicago-based company one of the nation's top TV station owners. Tribune said it will be the No. 1 commercial TV station group in the country based on its broadcast reach into more than 50 million homes.

The deal reshapes the broadcast media landscape and follows two recent broadcast acquisition deals by companies whose roots are in newspapers. These companies are trying to acquire additional television stations at a time when the newspaper industry is faltering.

Last month, Gannett Co., the publisher of USA Today, announced plans to buy TV station owner Belo Corp. for about $1.5 billion. The acquisition will nearly double Gannett's portfolio of stations from 23 to 43, reaching nearly one-third of U.S. households. The company said the deal will give it access to what it said are some of the fastest-growing television markets, including Dallas, Houston and Seattle.

Just a week earlier, Media General Inc. and New Young Broadcasting Holding Co. announced plans to combine into a company that will operate 30 TV stations in 27 markets including San Francisco, Nashville, Tenn., and Richmond, Va. That came after Media General sold all its newspapers last year to focus on broadcasting.

There are several reasons why broadcast stations are increasingly attractive. For one, they offer companies more opportunities to sell increasingly lucrative political-campaign ads in battleground markets. Another plus: The more stations a conglomerate owns, the more clout is has when negotiating the fees that cable and satellite TV companies pay to include broadcast stations on customers' lineups.

Tribune cited those factors, as well as its potential to maximize its national and local advertising sales, while acquiring more outlets to distribute its video and digital content.

"Our investment thesis is simple. Scale matters," Tribune Co. President and CEO Peter Liguori said in a conference call with analysts.

The company said it expects the deal to boost its profits immediately and result in more than $100 million in annual cost savings within five years. Local TV's holdings include stations in Denver, Cleveland, St. Louis and other major cities. Markets served by Tribune include Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Seattle. Tribune also has one radio station, WGN-AM in Chicago. Tribune will be getting seven additional Fox stations and five more CBS affiliates through the deal.

Tribune is trying to sell its newspapers to focus on its more profitable broadcasting operations. The newspaper sale is being done at the behest of a group of lenders that took over the company as part of a bankruptcy reorganization.

The newspapers have been hurt by a shift that has driven more readers and advertisers to the Internet and mobile devices. The downturn in print advertising was one of the factors that caused Tribune to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2008. It emerged from court oversight at the end of 2012.

Local TV is principally owned by private equity firm Oak Hill Capital Partners.

The Tribune deal, which remains subject to antitrust and Federal Communications Commission approvals, is expected to close by the end of 2013. Tribune Co. said it has received committed financing of up to $4.1 billion and expects the deal will be financed through a combination of debt financing and cash on hand.

Teaching a computer to play concentration advances security, understanding of the mind

July 1, 2013 ? Computer science researchers have programmed a computer to play the game Concentration (also known as Memory). The work could help improve computer security -- and improve our understanding of how the human mind works.

The researchers developed a program to get the software system called ACT-R, a computer simulation that attempts to replicate human thought processes, to play Concentration. In the game, multiple matching pairs of cards are placed face down in a random order, and players are asked to flip over two cards, one at a time, to find the matching pairs. If a player flips over two cards that do not match, the cards are placed back face down. The player succeeds by remembering where the matching cards are located.

The researchers were able to either rush ACT-R's decision-making, which led it to play more quickly but make more mistakes, or allow ACT-R to take its time, which led to longer games with fewer mistakes.

As part of the study, 179 human participants played Concentration 20 times each -- 10 times for accuracy and 10 times for speed -- to give the researchers a point of comparison for their ACT-R model.

The findings will help the researchers distinguish between human players and automated "bots," ultimately helping them develop models to identify bots in a variety of applications. These bots pose security problems for online games, online voting and other Web applications.

"One way to approach the distinction between bot behavior and human behavior is to look at how bots behave," says Dr. Robert St. Amant, an associate professor of computer science at NC State and co-author of a paper describing the work. "Another way is to look at what humans do. We're focusing on the latter."

"We're looking for distinctions so subtle that they'd be very difficult to replicate outside of a cognitive architecture like ACT-R," says Dr. David Roberts, an assistant professor of computer science at NC State and co-author of the paper. "The level of sophistication needed to replicate those distinctions in a bot would be so expensive, in terms of time and money, that it would -- hopefully -- be cost-prohibitive."

The researchers were also able to modify the parameters of their Concentration model to determine which set of variables resulted in gameplay that most closely matched the gameplay of the human study participants.

This offers a plausible explanation of the cognitive processes taking place in the human mind when playing Concentration. For example, the Concentration model sometimes has a choice to make: remember a previous matching card and select it, or explore the board by selecting a new card. When playing for speed, the model takes the latter choice because it's faster than retrieving the information from memory. This may also be what's happening in the human brain when we play Concentration.

"This is information that moves us incrementally closer to understanding how cognitive function relates to the way we interact with computers," Roberts says. "Ultimately, this sort of information could one day be used to develop tools to help software designers identify how their design decisions affect the end users of their products. For example, do some design features confuse users? Which ones, and at what point? That would be useful information."

The paper, "Modeling the Concentration Game with ACT-R," will be presented at the International Conference on Cognitive Modeling, being held July 11-14 in Ottawa. Lead author of the paper is Titus Barik, a Ph.D. student at NC State. Co-authors include St. Amant, Roberts, and NC State Ph.D. students Arpan Chakraborty and Brent Harrison. The research was supported by the National Security Agency.

(AP) ? Curveball, fastballs, good pitches, bad pitches, it doesn't matter to Chris Davis.

They're all flying off his bat and into the seats at a record pace.

Davis homered twice to raise his major league-leading total to 30, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Yankees 11-3 Saturday night to extend New York's losing streak to four games.

Davis hit a three-run drive in the first inning and added a two-run shot in the sixth, his third multihomer game of the season. The five RBIs gave him 79, second-most in the big leagues and just six short of his career high.

Davis is the first player in Orioles history to hit 30 home runs before the end of June. With one more long ball in the next 14 games, Davis will break the franchise record for home runs before the All-Star break, set in 1996 by Brady Anderson.

"You can't make mistakes," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We made two mistakes with two curveballs tonight. We left them up in the zone and he hit them both out. He's not hitting 1.000, but I will say he is having a tremendous year. You have to make your pitches."

Given that Davis' career high for home runs in a season is 33, who could have seen this coming?

"I don't think it's anything you can predict," Davis said. "I think it's something you obviously work hard toward in the offseason to try and carry it into spring training and then into the season. I'm not going up there to try and hit home runs. I'm just trying to put good swings on good pitches. I think that's the biggest thing."

Davis scored three runs and upped his batting average to .333. The five RBIs tied a season high.

"You can see him grinding and working on it," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "He's not satisfied. He wants to continue to contribute at a high level for his teammates."

Ryan Flaherty also homered for the Orioles, who built a 9-0 lead in the third against David Phelps (5-5). Baltimore will seek to complete a three-game sweep on Sunday.

"They're a tough opponent and we get a chance to see them a bunch during the season, but we have a chance to go for the sweep," Davis said. "It would be huge for us."

Zach Britton (2-2) limited the offensively challenged, injury-riddled Yankees to one earned run over 5 2-3 innings. New York began the day ranked 26th in batting average and 23rd in runs among the 30 major league teams.

Phelps surrendered nine hits and a career-high nine runs in 2 1-3 innings. The right-hander was 4-0 in his last nine starts against AL East foes since Aug. 27, 2012.

"I don't care what our offense is doing. If you give up nine runs, it's a big hole to dig yourself out of," Phelps said. "The last four or five games I've gotten good run support. It's frustrating to go out there and not give them a chance to do it."

The Yankees have lost 12 of 17 to fall within four games of .500 (42-38) for the first time since April 26 (13-9). In addition, New York has dropped four straight in Baltimore during a single season for the first time since 1982.

"You just have to keep fighting," said Robinson Cano, who had two hits. "Hopefully, sooner or later, we'll turn it around and start winning games so we can get closer. We got beat tonight. It's not like we making errors. There was not much you could do."

After Britton worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first, Baltimore batted around in the bottom half. Singles by Manny Machado, Nick Markakis and Adam Jones produced a run before Davis got under a 2-1 pitch and sent it soaring into the bullpen area beyond the center-field wall for a 4-0 lead.

The Orioles added five runs in the third. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for Chris Dickerson, who singled in two runs. Flaherty followed with a three-run shot to chase Phelps, who was replaced by Ivan Nova.

New York chased Britton in the sixth. After Zoilo Almonte hit a sacrifice fly, another run scored when Davis booted Lyle Overbay's two-out grounder to first. With the bases loaded, Jair Jurrjens came in and retired Austin Romine on a fly ball.

Davis homered off Nova in the bottom half after a single by Markakis. Successive doubles by Chris Stewart and Brett Garner off Pedro Strop made it 11-3 in the ninth.

NOTES: Brian Roberts (hip, knee) is scheduled to return from the DL and start at 2B for Baltimore on Sunday. The 35-year-old last played on April 4. ... Hiroki Kuroda takes the mound for New York on Sunday. Chris Tillman seeks his career-high 10th win for Baltimore. ... Nova is going to be part of the Yankees' six-man rotation heading into the All-Star break, and he could start in the upcoming series against Minnesota, manager Joe Girardi said. ... The Orioles recalled Jurrjens before the game and designated 1B Travis Ishikawa for assignment. ... The only starter in the Baltimore lineup without a hit was Nate McLouth, who went 0 for 5.

Obama steps up military aid to Syrian rebels

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama's authorization of military aid to the Syrian rebels "dramatically" increases U.S. support for the opposition, the White House said Friday, while acknowledging that it will take time for the supplies to reach fighters struggling in their clashes with Syrian President Bashar Assad.

U.S. officials said the new aid would include weapons and ammunition and comes in response to firmer evidence from the White House of chemical weapons use by Assad's regime.

"There's already material that's been flowing to the opposition and that will continue in the weeks to come," said Ben Rhodes, Obama's deputy national security adviser.

Obama has said the use of chemical weapons would cross a "red line," suggesting greater American intervention. While a small percentage of the 93,000 people reportedly killed in Syria are said to have died from chemical weapons ? U.S. intelligence puts the number at 100 to 150 ? the White House views the deployment of the deadly agents as a flouting of international norms.

Rhodes said Obama made the decision to authorize military aid to the rebels over the past few weeks. He also defended the president's caution on the issue, saying "these are not steps the president takes lightly."

The full scope of the assistance authorized by the White House is still unclear. But the administration could give the rebels a range of weapons, including small arms, assault rifles, shoulder-fired rocket-propelled grenades and other anti-tank missiles. The opposition forces could operate most of that equipment without significant training.

In Syria Friday, the Foreign Ministry said, "The White House has issued a statement full of lies about the use of chemical weapons in Syria based on fabricated information. The United States is using cheap tactics to justify President Barack Obama's decision to arm the Syrian opposition."

And in Moscow, President Vladimir Putin's foreign affairs adviser said Russia not convinced with Washington's claim that Syrian regime had used chemical weapons against the opposition. Yuri Ushakov told reporters the information provided by U.S. officials to Russia "didn't look convincing."

Rhodes, in response to Ushakov's comments, said the U.S. had "very firm" evidence, including physiological samples of sarin use.

The commander of the main Western-backed rebel group fighting in Syria said he hoped that U.S. weapons will be in the hands of rebels in the near future, noting it would boost the spirits of the fighters on the ground. "We hope to have the weapons and ammunition that we need in the near future," Gen. Salim Idris told Al-Arabiya TV.

"This will surely reflect positively on the rebels' morale, which is high despite attempts by the regime, Hezbollah and Iran to show that their morale after the fall of Qusair deteriorated," he said, referring to the town near the border with Lebanon.

Obama's opposition to sending American troops into Syria makes it less likely the U.S. will provide sophisticated arms or anti-aircraft weapons that would require large-scale training. Administration officials are also worried about high-powered weapons ending up in the hands of terrorist groups. Hezbollah fighters are among those backing Assad's armed forces, and al-Qaida-linked extremists back the rebellion.

The CIA and special operations trainers are already running some weapons training programs for the rebels and are expected to take charge of teaching the opposition how to use the weapons the U.S. has agreed to supply, another U.S. official said.

There is also some debate within the administration about who would provide the lethal aid and how it might be delivered, the U.S. officials said.

All the officials insisted on anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak on the record about internal administration discussions.

Obama has resisted arming the rebels until now, a cautious approach that underscores the deep divisions within his administration. The proponents of more aggressive action, including Secretary of State John Kerry, appeared to have won out over those wary of sending weapons and ammunition into the war zone.

The U.S. has made no decision on operating a no-fly zone over Syria, Rhodes said.

The U.S. has so far provided the Syrian rebel army with rations and medical supplies. The administration has also agreed in principle to provide body armor and other equipment such as night-vision goggles to the rebels, although the Pentagon has said there has been no movement on that as yet.

Word of the stepped-up assistance followed new U.S. intelligence assessments showing that Assad has used chemical weapons, including sarin, on a small scale multiple times in the last year.

Obama advisers believe Assad's regime still maintains control of Syria's chemical weapons stockpiles and does not see any evidence that rebel forces have launched attacks using the deadly agents. However, British Prime Minister David Cameron said Friday that there were some indications that "al Qaida-linked elements" in the opposition have "attempted to acquire chemical weapons for probable use in Syria."

The Obama administration announced in April that it had "varying degrees of confidence" that sarin had been used in Syria. But they said at the time that they had not been able to determine who was responsible for deploying the gas.

The more conclusive findings announced Thursday were aided by evidence sent to the United States by France, which, along with Britain, has announced it had determined that Assad's government had used chemical weapons.

In Brussels, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Friday, "The international community has made clear that any use of chemical weapons is completely unacceptable and a clear breach of international law."

He said he welcomes the "clear U.S. statement" and called on Syria to "grant access to the United Nations to investigate all reports of chemical weapons use."

Obama has said repeatedly that the use of chemical weapons would cross a "red line" and constitute a "game changer" for U.S. policy on Syria, which until now has focused entirely on providing the opposition with nonlethal assistance and humanitarian aid.

The White House said it had notified Congress, the United Nations and key international allies about the new U.S. chemical weapons determination. Obama will discuss the assessments, along with broader problems in Syria, during the summit of eight leading industrial nations next week in Northern Ireland.

Among those in attendance will be Russia's Putin, one of Assad's most powerful backers. Obama and Putin will hold a one-on-one meeting on the sidelines of the summit, and the U.S. leader is expected to press his Russian counterpart to drop his political and military support for the Syrian government.

The Syrian fighters have been clamoring for bolder Western intervention, particularly given the estimated 5,000 Hezbollah guerrillas propping up Assad's forces. Assad's stunning military success last week at Qusair, near the Lebanese border, and preparations for offensives against Homs and Aleppo have made the matter more urgent.

Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif., the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said he supported the president's decision "to expand assistance for the vetted Syrian opposition." But other lawmakers expressed reservations, including Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

AWE-HORACEK Blog: Start An Internet Home Business And Earn ...

Are you searching for ways to supplement your income? Many are turning to the internet as it is such a convenient platform to use to start an internet business and earn extra income online from home.

Prior to starting your search on the internet for an extra income opportunity or deciding to start an internet home business, it may be a good idea to find out if that is the ideal way for you to earn extra income.

Everybody?s circumstances differ and they have different reasons for needing to earn extra income. So many people today just cannot make it through the month on their salary and therefore they need to be looking long term at finding a way to earn extra income on a regular basis to make ends meet and to have a more comfortable life.

Others may decide that they would rather take an overseas holiday next year instead of a local one or that they would rather pay off their mortgage bond in 10 years as opposed to say 15 or 20 years.

Some may decide they require extra income to pay off their debts and to start building a nest egg for later on in life. Others may need to provide for further education for their children.

Whilst it may be simple to start an internet business and sound ideal to be able to work at home bear in mind that it takes time and effort, patience and determination to earn extra income online. It is not as easy as it sounds and therefore is not suitable for everybody.

Starting an internet business is the easy part and then one is going to go through a huge learning curve to master and implement the internet marketing methods that work. It takes time to build momentum and generate enough targeted traffic to your website to start earning extra income. So starting an internet business is not a quick fix solution for someone in urgent need of money.

The great advantage of starting an internet business is that you can continue building your business forever. As long as you have your own domain name and website you will be in total control of your business and be able to make changes to the site and add to it as you wish. There is no limit to how much you can earn, it is all going to depend on how much quality time you put in on a consistent basis. The sky is the limit and you could easily end up turning your extra online income into a full time income and be able to fire your boss and work at home full time.

If on the other hand you need money urgently by the end of the month starting an internet business is not going to be the answer for you. You will barely have got the business launched yet alone had time to start building momentum and drive targeted traffic to your website. Rather that starting an internet business you would more likely make extra income quicker by partaking in the data entry business and online survey income programs.

It is always advisable to have a second income stream as a job is never guaranteed. There is also the very real and frightening fact about how much money we need if we intend retiring. With the cost of living rising all the time, the average person does not earn enough to be able to save for retirement or for an unexpected big expense.

If you start an internet business working from home in the evenings, before there is a crisis, it will give you time to build a solid base to a good source of extra online income.

Defending champion Kings ousted in Western finals

CHICAGO (AP) ? The Los Angeles Kings kept playing through a slew of injuries. They kept coming when the Chicago Blackhawks jumped out to an early lead, and they tried everything to force another home game in the Western Conference finals.

They just couldn't find a way this year.

Once Chicago's Patrick Kane found his offensive game, it was all over for the defending Stanley Cup champions.

Anze Kopitar and Mike Richards scored in the third period for Los Angeles, but Kane netted his third goal of the game 11:40 into the second overtime period to lift Chicago to a 4-3 victory on Saturday night and a spot in the Stanley Cup finals against the Boston Bruins.

"You don't take much solace in losing," Kings forward Justin Williams said. "It's a bitter taste. Yeah, we were one of the final four, but that wasn't our goal when we set out to start the season. We're not able to defend what we did last year and that's a frustrating thing."

Los Angeles recovered after trailing 2-0 in the first period and 3-2 late in regulation in the longest game in franchise history. Dwight King had a short-handed goal, and Jonathan Quick finished with 31 saves.

"We got beat in the conference finals by the best team in the conference, at the end of the day," Kings coach Darryl Sutter said. "We accomplished everything. Once you set the bar up there, then that's your bar. So obviously we're disappointed to lose to Chicago, but we're certainly not disappointed in how we played."

It was Richards' first game since he took a big hit from Chicago's Dave Bolland in the series opener, shelving the center with a suspected concussion. But Sutter vaguely alluded to a handful of injuries, and captain Dustin Brown acknowledged that he tore the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Game 6 of Los Angeles' second-round series against San Jose.

Despite the injuries, which Sutter said were typical of a team at this point in the playoffs, the Kings gave themselves a chance.

"We played well in the second and third, and even overtime I think we had a lot of chances," Richards said. "But give them credit, they played well and their goaltender made some big saves."

Corey Crawford made 33 saves, and Duncan Keith scored in his return from a suspension as the top-seeded Blackhawks eliminated the Kings in five games.

Chicago will host the Eastern Conference champion Bruins in Game 1 on Wednesday night. Boston completed a sweep of the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night.

"It's a special couple places. The tradition of the Bruins and the Hawks is special," Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. "I'm sure, you know, the rivalry could return instantly come Game 1. I think it's good for the league. It's good for hockey. Two great hockey markets. We're very excited to be a part of it."

This is the first finals matchup of NHL Original Six franchises since 1979, and it will pit two of the last three champions against each other.

Chicago won the Cup in 2010, ending a 49-year drought. Boston captured the title the following year.

"Every series presents its challenges," forward Patrick Sharp said. "Watching Boston, they're rolling right now. Another tough series ahead of us."

Kane was in the middle of a quiet postseason when he finished off Bryan Bickell's shot for his third playoff goal in Chicago's 3-2 win in Los Angeles on Thursday. The talented forward yelled in relief after that goal and came up with his best performance of the playoffs in Game 5.

After Crawford made a couple of big saves in the first overtime, Jonathan Toews carried the puck up the left side during a 2-on-1 rush in the second extra session. He then made a cross-ice pass to Kane, who one-timed a shot past Quick and into the right side.

"You know, the shift before, actually Jonny had the same play and the puck fumbled on him," Kane said. "I knew he was coming back to me. Just tried to wait for the defenseman to go by me. Tried to get it off as quick as I could in the net."

The rollicking sellout crowd of 22,237 erupted in joy as Kane started the celebration for the Blackhawks. A distraught Quick remained face down on the ice as his teammates emptied the bench for the post-series handshakes.

Chicago was poised to finish off Los Angeles in regulation when the Kings scored the tying goal with 9.4 seconds remaining. Kopitar took a long shot from the right side and Richards managed to tip it by Crawford, leading to a celebration for the Kings while the crowd groaned in disbelief.

"He's a big heart-and-soul guy and comes up with a timely goal to push it to overtime, and we just couldn't find a way to get that extra," Kings center Jarret Stoll said.

Crawford used his glove to deny Williams and Jake Muzzin in rapid succession midway through the first overtime. Bickell had an opportunity to end the game at the other end, but he was unable to corral Kane's pass on a rush to the net.

The lost lead at the end of regulation turned into a minor inconvenience for the Blackhawks when Kane finished his second career postseason hat trick.

Los Angeles' rally began when Williams made strong charge up the left side set up King's short-handed goal at 9:28 of the second. The Kings tied it 2-2 when Kopitar pushed a rebound through Crawford's legs 3? minutes into the third.

It was Kopitar's first point of the series, and he snapped a six-game goal drought. It also was the third power-play goal allowed by the Blackhawks in 58 playoff chances.

The tie held until the Blackhawks took advantage of a bad break for the Kings to go in front again.

Williams had the puck behind the net when he fell, and Bickell made a slick pass to Kane, who beat Quick to give the Blackhawks a 3-2 lead with 3:52 remaining.

"We had some chances but you've got to bury your chances in overtime," Los Angeles defenseman Matt Greene said. "They did a good job. They had a chance, they capitalized and that's it. It's overtime."

NOTES: It was the 38th playoff game in the past two seasons for Los Angeles. ... Toews and Bickell each had two assists. ... The Kings' previous longest game was a 4-3 double-overtime win at Vancouver on May 11, 1993.

Heineman Vetoes $200K in Golf Tournament Funding

Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman has used a line-item veto to strike $200,000 from the state budget that was approved for an Omaha golf tournament.

The governor said Tuesday that funding for the U.S. Senior Open golf tournament is unjustified, given the state's other spending priorities on education and changes to juvenile services. Heineman also argued that the event is heavily supported by the private sector and experiencing record ticket sales.

Heineman signed the remainder of the budget bill, which authorized funding for deficit appropriations. The bill was one of seven budget measures that lawmakers have passed this year.

Bernanke signals Fed to maintain stimulus efforts

(AP) ? Chairman Ben Bernanke is telling Congress Wednesday that the U.S. job market remains weak and that it is too soon for the Federal Reserve to end its extraordinary stimulus programs.

Reducing the Fed's efforts to keep borrowing rates low would "carry a substantial risk of slowing or ending the economic recovery," Bernanke said in testimony to the Joint Economic Committee.

Bernanke noted that the economy is growing moderately this year and unemployment has fallen to a four-year low of 7.5 percent. Still, unemployment remains well above levels consistent with healthy economies. And Bernanke said higher taxes and deep federal spending cuts are expected to slow economic growth this year.

His comments about the many risks facing the economy, along with the benefits gained so far from the Fed's stimulus, suggest the Fed is not ready to taper bond purchases that have helped lower long-term interest rates to encourage more borrowing and spending.

Stocks surged after Bernanke's comments. The Dow Jones industrial average was up just 40 points before his comments were released at 10 a.m. EDT. Minutes later, the Dow was up 125 points.

The Fed has said it plans to continue its $85 billion-a-month in Treasury and mortgage bond purchases until the job market improves substantially. And after its April 30-May 1 meeting, the Fed said it could increase or decrease the pace depending on how the job market and inflation fare.

Investors have been closely scrutinizing policymakers' comments since then for clues about the pace of the bond purchases.

Bernanke has had solid support for the bond purchases among the voting members of the Fed's interest-rate setting committee. At each of the Fed's three policy meetings this year, the committee has approved the purchases 11-1.

In recent months, the job market and the broader economy have shown renewed vigor. The economy has added an average of 208,000 jobs a month since November. That's up from only 138,000 a month in the previous six months.

The economy has benefited from a resurgent housing market, rising consumer confidence and the Fed's stimulus actions, which have helped ignite a stock market rally. The Standard & Poor's 500 stock index has jumped 17 percent this year to a record high. Higher stock prices tend to make many people feel wealthier and more inclined to spend.

Those gains, in part, are why critics of the bond purchases, including some Fed regional bank presidents, have questioned the need to continue them at their current pace. They argue that keeping interest rates too low for too long could send inflation surging or inflate dangerous bubbles in assets such as stocks or real estate. Such a bubble could burst with the same destabilizing effects that the housing bust caused.
