iSwifter Reveals Itself As ?Agawi,? Announces Second Version Of ...

The Menlo Park-based company formerly known as iSwifter has announced version 2.0 of its cloud gaming platform to offer more content types and usage on clients beyond iPads. With today?s release of capabilities they describe as??any game, anywhere, instantly? comes a new name, the acronym Agawi.

Android tablets, Windows 8 tablets, smart TVs, Macs, and PCs will be able to stream games via cloud service. While the company?s first offering, the iSwifter Flash web browser app available in the iTunes store, is largely used by social and casual gamers, the new platform is aimed at publishers of mid-core and hardcore gaming titles. With the announcement Agawi is expanding its B2B offerings in the hopes of wooing creators of premier AAA games (which means it may not be long before games traditionally seen on GameStop shelves are available to gamers playing without consoles).

The company has developed both products with $500K in funding, much less than the $56.5MM that competitor OnLive?raised and used to pay for data centers before closing and being sold recently. As opposed to companies that offer storage-based solutions, Agawi hopes that game publishers will pay licensing fees to use their technology and to reach new audiences through any third-party cloud service provider.

Co-founder and executive chairman Peter Relan says that cloud gaming will change gaming interactions in the same way that streaming has changed movie viewing, improving on the experience of going to a video store to rent a DVD. ?The cloud gives you the ability to provide necessary capacity to users who want to have their content whenever and wherever they want it,? said Relan. He says the offerings will help publishers reach gamers who are currently underserved and who may prefer to play on tablet over PC.

With 30 people, Agawi has increased its engineering team and is triple the size it was when it launched the first version of the platform. The company was incubated through YouWeb, which helped launch mobile game network?OpenFeint and social gaming company CrowdStar. It has received?angel funding from Dave Roux, co-founder of Silver Lake,?which helped sell Skype to Microsoft.

Agawi says that it isn?t emphasizing consumer-facing offerings with this release. The company stresses that it is looking more to interest publishers and developers than expand its overall user base of 3 million gamers. It will be?announcing new partners for the updated version of the platform at the Cloud Gaming USA conference in San Francisco in early September.

Mars rover Curiosity begins driving at Bradbury landing

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has begun driving from its landing site, which scientists announced today they have named for the late author Ray Bradbury.

Making its first movement on the Martian surface, Curiosity's drive combined forward, turn and reverse segments. This placed the rover roughly 20 feet (6 meters) from the spot where it landed 16 days ago.

NASA has approved the Curiosity science team's choice to name the landing ground for the influential author who was born 92 years ago today and died this year. The location where Curiosity touched down is now called Bradbury Landing.

"This was not a difficult choice for the science team," said Michael Meyer, NASA program scientist for Curiosity. "Many of us and millions of other readers were inspired in our lives by stories Ray Bradbury wrote to dream of the possibility of life on Mars."

Today's drive confirmed the health of Curiosity's mobility system and produced the rover's first wheel tracks on Mars, documented in images taken after the drive. During a news conference today at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., the mission's lead rover driver, Matt Heverly, showed an animation derived from visualization software used for planning the first drive.

"We have a fully functioning mobility system with lots of amazing exploration ahead," Heverly said.

Curiosity will spend several more days of working beside Bradbury Landing, performing instrument checks and studying the surroundings, before embarking toward its first driving destination approximately 1,300 feet (400 meters) to the east-southeast.

"Curiosity is a much more complex vehicle than earlier Mars rovers. The testing and characterization activities during the initial weeks of the mission lay important groundwork for operating our precious national resource with appropriate care," said Curiosity Project Manager Pete Theisinger of JPL. "Sixteen days in, we are making excellent progress."

The science team has begun pointing instruments on the rover's mast for investigating specific targets of interest near and far. The Chemistry and Camera (ChemCam) instrument used a laser and spectrometers this week to examine the composition of rocks exposed when the spacecraft's landing engines blew away several inches of overlying material.

The instrument's principal investigator, Roger Weins of Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, reported that measurements made on the rocks in this scoured-out feature called Goulburn suggest a basaltic composition. "These may be pieces of basalt within a sedimentary deposit," Weins said.

Curiosity began a two-year prime mission on Mars when the Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft delivered the car-size rover to its landing target inside Gale Crater on Aug. 5 PDT (Aug. 6 EDT). The mission will use 10 science instruments on the rover to assess whether the area has ever offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life.

In a career spanning more than 70 years, Ray Bradbury inspired generations of readers to dream, think and create. A prolific author of hundreds of short stories and nearly to 50 books, as well as numerous poems, essays, operas, plays, teleplays, and screenplays, Bradbury was one of the most celebrated writers of our time.

His groundbreaking works include "Fahrenheit 451," "The Martian Chronicles," "The Illustrated Man," "Dandelion Wine," and "Something Wicked This Way Comes." He wrote the screenplay for John Huston's classic film adaptation of "Moby Dick," and was nominated for an Academy Award. He adapted 65 of his stories for television's "The Ray Bradbury Theater," and won an Emmy for his teleplay of "The Halloween Tree."

JPL manages the Mars Science Laboratory/Curiosity for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The rover was designed, developed and assembled at JPL.

China PMI shows more manufacturing weakness

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- China's factories continued to struggle in August, as a key manufacturing reading fell to a nine-month low.

HSBC's initial purchasing manager's Index for Chinese manufacturing fell to 47.8 from 49.3 in July, the bank said Thursday. Any reading below 50 indicates that factory activity is shrinking rather than growing.

"Chinese producers are still struggling with strong global headwinds," said Hongbin Qu, chief Chinese economist at HSBC.

China, the world's second-largest economy behind the United States, has been hit particularly hard by the recession in much of Europe. The European sovereign debt crisis has prompted steep austerity measures in many countries. Weak conditions have zapped demand in the eurozone, the largest market for Chinese exports.

In addition, the U.S. economy has slowed, further cutting demand for Chinese exports. The slowdown in China also worries investors because China has become a major market for U.S. companies.

There was a lot of bad news in the latest reading, as manufacturing executives surveyed said all the various components they were questioned on -- employment, production, exports and backlogs of orders -- continued to retreat instead of grow..

"There is scarcely anything positive in the breakdown to report," said Mark Williams, chief Asia economist for Capital Economics, in a note to clients. "Demand appears to have slowed even more abruptly. That suggests output could slow even further."

" And it's worth noting that Chinese firms are not the only ones being hit: the July export data for Korea, Taiwan and Japan were all terrible too," Williams added.

Williams said in response to the weakness, the People's Bank of China, the nation's central bank, injected 145 billion yuan, or about $22.8 billion, into the economy. Taken together with the 220 billion yuan injection announced Tuesday, that makes for the largest weekly injection of cash by the bank so far this year, Williams said.

Williams and other economists are expecting even more loosening of monetary policy in China in the coming weeks and months, including cuts in the requirements for how much banks there must hold in reserve, in an effort to jump start the sluggish economy there.

"I think we'll see reserve requirements cut fairly soon," he said.

Despite the PMI report, major markets in Asia closed slightly higher, while European markets were all trading slightly higher and U.S. futures pointed to gains at the open. Federal Reserve minutes released Wednesday afternoon lifted investor hopes for more stimulus from the U.S. central bank.

As Congress prepares to reauthorize the controversial FISA Amendments Act of 2008 ? which effectively legalized the notorious warrantless wiretap program launched by President Bush ? much about the law remains shrouded in secrecy: The National Security Agency has refused to give legislators even a rough estimate of how many Americans? communications have been swept up in the digital dragnet.

Yet even four years after the FAA?s passage, one of the biggest mysteries isn?t how the law has been used, but why it was necessary in the first place. One surprising ? but surprisingly plausible ? explanation points to the unexpected consequences of broadband deregulation.

In other words, it seems entirely plausible that the Bush?administration?s?deregulation of cable broadband service accidentally led to a secret court refusing to approve a sizable?chunk?of the NSA?s wiretapping activities. That ruling then precipitated a dramatic political battle full of overblown claims of threats to America and eventually resulted in the passage of a measure expanding the NSA?s ability to intercept communications inside the United States.

For those who don?t remember, the?FISA Amendments Act?was introduced to replace the short-lived?Protect America Act of 2007, and both were designed to enable large-scale programmatic surveillance of communications between the United States and other countries.

Controversy over a provision granting?retroactive immunity to telecommunications firms?that participated in the original,?extralegal warrantless wiretap program?stalled the bill in Congress for months in late 2007 and early 2008: Senator Chris Dodd filibustered the initiative, and then-?senator and presidential candidate Barack Obama opposed the bill, but finally agreed to support it, while promising to revisit and reform the bill once in office. Despite that promise, the Obama administration has now declared the reauthorization of the FAA without substantial changes a top legislative priority.

At the time, Americans were told that the FAA (and before it, the PAA) was needed because of a?ruling by the secretive Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court?that had prevented the government from intercepting purely foreign-to-foreign communications that happened to pass over American wires.

That came as a surprise to surveillance experts, because the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act from 1978 had always defined the interception of the contents of a ?wire communication? as ?electronic surveillance,? requiring a court order if and only if either the sender or the recipient of that communication was inside the United States. Intelligence surveillance of strictly foreign-to-foreign wire communications was always understood to be allowed, even if the interception was done domestically, when the communication happened to pass through a U.S. telecom switch.

But apparently in early 2007, something changed.

Then-?House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) publicly declared that a secret ruling by the (normally highly deferential) FISC had found a problem with a National Security Agency surveillance program, and had limited NSA?s ability to intercept even wholly foreign communications.

Supporters of broader spying powers characterized the decision as requiring a warrant for all interception of foreign-to-foreign communications, including phone calls, but that turns out not to have been quite accurate:Kenneth Wainstein, then a high-ranking Justice Department official, later clarified that the problem was specifically related to interception of e-mail, where the locations of both parties to the communication might not be known to NSA in advance.

Even this, however, was a little peculiar.

E-mail was not exactly a new technology in 2007, after all, so what had changed? At the time, those of us who closely-followed intelligence policy mostly assumed that the issue had to do with the greatly increased breadth of the surveillance NSA was trying to conduct. But there is another possibility that fits the public evidence very well ?one hinted at very indirectly in the new edition of the standard legal reference text on FISA law, David Kris and Douglas Wilson?s ?National Security Investigations and Prosecutions.?
