CT scans boost breast cancer risk

Common imaging tests can lead to cancer

If there?s anything more striking than the rise in breast cancer rates, it?s the rise in breast cancer rates among YOUNG patients.

These aren?t tumors caught early by the wonders of modern medicine. Many of them are actually CAUSED by the radiation of new technologies ? especially CT scans.

A single CT scan packs up to 150 times the radioactive punch of a chest X-ray ? and when it?s delivered to the chest of a young lady, it can kick off the tumor-making process even in her teenage years.

As a result, girls and young women who have two or more CT scans before the age of 23 have double the breast cancer risk over the next 10 years, according to a new study.

That means an 11-year-old who gets zapped twice could find herself battling the disease by the time she?s old enough to drink.

Happy birthday ? here?s your cancer!

Once upon a time, this study would barely be relevant. Who could possibly be getting multiple CT scans before the age of 23 anyway?

Well, these days getting slammed with CT radiation is like training wheels and braces. It?s practically a childhood ritual ? and some kids are being hit two, three, four times, or more, especially in the ER.

One new study finds a 34 percent increase in pediatric CT scans between 2001 and 2009.

Already, it?s estimated that CT scans may be responsible for 29,000 new cancers every year ? and you can bet that as more people are zapped at every age, those numbers will keep rising.

You can?t do anything about the statistics, but you can protect your family. Make sure any time you, your kids or your grandkids are zapped there?s a real reason for it.
