Several years ago my wife and I decided to plant an above ground vegetable garden. The concept is relatively simple. You build a box to hold your soil and organic materials, and then plant your seeds. The benefit of an above ground garden is that you don't have to dig up your yard and deal with rocks, roots, and poor soil.
We were excited to get started and made a list of everything we needed. Once the box was constructed, we layered in the manure, organic materials, and top soil. Finally, we laid out our vegetable rows and planted the seeds, topped with a light layer of planting straw, and watered. Then we waited, and waited, and waited. Nothing happened. Every morning as soon as it was light, I would run out to the garden to see what was growing. Every morning it was the same story, nothing. I was discouraged.
Starting a business from home to earn income online is a lot like planting a vegetable garden from seeds. You work like crazy to get from the idea stage to implementation. You create your business plan, design a website, find someone to host your blog, build an auto responder, write and track your ads, create content, etc. You are ready and anxious to make sales, and nothing happens. It is like your seeds have been planted and you are waiting for the seeds to grow. But it is not happening fast enough.
Like nature, "growing" a successful online business from your home requires an understanding of cycles. The first cycle is "startup" which is defined by frenzied activity that is new and exciting because you are taking a bold step towards securing you financial independence. The second cycle is the "planting" of your business where you are initiating the promotional campaign necessary to generate a list of prospects that can be converted to loyal customers. The third cycle is the "harvest" where you experience actual sales revenue and profit from your efforts.
The timing of these cycles is what I believe discourages many who start their own home based businesses with the best of intentions. For me, the startup cycle was fun, energizing, and exciting. I love to learn new things and this phase was pure joy. Same with the planting cycle; nothing but positive energy and anticipation. In the first 6 months of my online business venture, I brought in a total of $20. All that time, effort, and money for twenty bucks?! This is where my vegetable garden experience helped.
From the time that we planted the seeds in our new vegetable garden, it took 6 weeks of daily watering and plucking weeds before we saw the earliest signs of seed germination. From that point, it was another 6 weeks of watering, weeding, and pest control before the garden actually started to take on the look of a garden that was going to produce results. Four months into it, we started taking out fresh organic vegetables and putting them on the dinner table. The harvets cycle was very satisfying, but it took alot of patience and confidence that with the right effort, the vegetables would grow.
Back to the business - Most people who have not had the vegetable garden experience would have given up after making only twenty bucks after six months. Not me. I knew that the seeds had been planted, and I was diligently watering and weeding daily in the form of email marketing and content distribution to build my subscriber list. True, six months may seem like a long time to not generate revenue from your efforts, but it really isn't if you consider that the business can support you for the rest of your life. The patience and persistence paid off when the money came flowing in, just like tomatoes ripening on the vine.

The parasitic mite Varroa destructor is a major contributor to the recent mysterious death of honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Genome Biology finds that specific proteins, released by damaged larvae and in the antennae of adult honey bees, can drive hygienic behavior of the adults and promote the removal of infected larvae from the hive.
V. destructor sucks the blood (hemolymph) of larval and adult bees leaving them weakened and reducing the ability of their immune systems to fight off infections. Not that honey bees have strong immune systems in the first place since they have fewer immunity genes than solitary insects such as flies and moths. These tiny mites can also spread viral disease between hosts. This double onslaught is thought to be a significant contributor to Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD).
But all is not lost - honey bees have evolved a way to fight back: hygienic behavior where diseased or parasitized larvae are removed from their brood cells, and Varroa-sensitive hygienic behavior which they use to reduce the number of reproductive mites on remaining larvae.
To find exactly how bees respond to hive infections, researchers from Canada looked at the natural behavioral of bees in the presence of damaged larvae and compared this to protein differences in the larvae and adults. After scanning 1200 proteins the team found that several proteins, including LOC552009 (of unknown function but similar to ApoO), found in the antennae of adults were associated with both uncapping brood cells and the removal of larvae. Other proteins were involved in olfaction or in signal transduction, probably helping the adults find infected larvae amongst a brood.
In damaged larvae, transglutaminase, a protein involved in blood clotting, was upregulated, which appeared to be a key component in regulating the adult's behavior. Other proteins indicated adaptations to help fight infection, including chitin biosynthesis and immune responses.
Dr Leonard Foster from CHIBI at the University of British Columbia, who led this research said, "Bee keepers have previously focused on selecting bees with traits such as enhanced honey production, gentleness and winter survival. We have found a set of proteins which could be used to select colonies on their ability to resist Varroa mite infestation and can be used to find individuals with increased hygienic behavior. Given the increasing resistance of Varroa to available drugs this would provide a natural way of ensuring honey farming and potentially survival of the species."

It can be frustrating trying to figure out where to start improving your home, but it will be worth it down the road. Be patient and do a lot of research on the projects you are interested in. Continue reading to learn some excellent tips on completely maximizing the effectiveness of your renovation ideas.
It is expensive to purchase new furniture. Try shopping at your local thrift stores and yard sales to add some new pieces to your rooms without breaking the bank. There are often some real gems hiding amongst used items. You may have to clean them up a bit, but it?s worth the time you take.
Personalize your home, but don?t make it too different from the other houses in the area. You don?t need to be the one resident living with a home that has an attached tower. If your home looks too different, you?ll experience difficulty selling it.
Talk to a contractor if you?re having trouble deciding how to increase your home?s value. They will know the areas of improvement that will increase profit the most and give you suggestions on what should be changed.
If your home improvement project is going to inconvenience the neighbors, make sure they know as soon as possible. If it involves a major renovation project, it could entail having part of the street blocked off from traffic in order to move equipment around and make deliveries. Your neighbors will appreciate a little warning before you inconvenience them this way.
Always check references if want to hire anyone to help with your home improvement projects. Make sure you treat this as you are the employer and they are the employee of your business. You need to figure out their background as thoroughly as you can and be sure that there are others that have been happy with what they?ve done.
Don?t ever hire an unlicensed contractor. Every state requires some form of certification for general contractors and sub-contractors. While these requirements do not guarantee contractor competence, they are legally required. Also, contractors who do not have the necessary licenses probably also do not have sufficient insurance coverage.
Have a no-shoes rule in your home if you have just installed fresh carpeting or wood flooring. Lay down some slippers you can or have areas where shoes can easily be slipped off to provide encouragement to get everyone to take their shoes off. This can go a long way in helping to keep dirt and debris from scratching or staining wood floors or carpeting.
Try installing cheap and efficient LED lights near or in your closets. The dollar stores now carry these lights! Some types of LED lights require one or two screws to install. Others come with double-sided sticky tape. If you buy automatic lights, you can just open the door and the light will turn on.
It can be rewarding to do home improvement, but it is also a serious amount of work and time. Your dream home can be yours if you are willing to put the work into it. Use what you?ve learned and turn your home around.
The best means to update the look of your house is Wichita home windows installed.

South African populist firebrand Julius Malema, a former leader of the African National Congress' Youth League, smiles as he arrives in court on Wednesday.
By NBC News staff and wire reports
POLOKWANE, South Africa --?Firebrand South African politician Julius Malema appeared in a regional court Wednesday on a charge of money laundering in connection with a $6.5 million government contract awarded to a company his family trust partly owns.
Malema appeared in a police station in Polokwane, in South Africa's northeast, before entering the regional court. People started cheering when he entered the courtroom.
Large crowds of supporters also gathered around the police station and court, chanting his name. Vigils were held through the night for him, where supporters sang songs against South Africa's president. Malema was granted bail of $1,250 by the court and his next court date is Nov. 30.
Malema says charges are politically motivated at a time when he's become outspoken about the labor unrest in South Africa's mining industry and says they are meant to shut him up after he threatened to make the mines ungovernable.
Malema was expelled from the ruling African National Congress party earlier this year for sowing disunity.
Julius Malema, the South African politician blamed for inflaming the miners' strikes, there told NBC News that the treatment of the poor is worse now than it was under apartheid. NBC's Rohit Kachroo reports.
In an interview with NBC News? Rohit Kachroo earlier this month, Malema said the mineworkers were ?prepared to die? over the dispute.
?They will never kill all the mineworkers. It is not practically possible unless they are prepared to face charges of genocide,? Malema added. ?For every revolution there are casualties. ... We lost many great people during the apartheid struggle.?

Supporters of Julius Malema, who claim the case against him is politically motivated, demonstrate near the courthouse on Wednesday.
He claims conditions for many black people are worse under democracy than they were under apartheid. ?The gap between the rich and the poor has widened,? Malema told NBC News.
Voice of hate or hero? South Africa's downtrodden workers put faith in Malema
In a separate case, the South African Revenue Service is also charging Malema with unpaid taxes and interest of $2 million.
View images of civil rights leader Nelson Mandela, who went from anti-apartheid activist to prisoner to South Africa's first black president.
Malema's four business associates appeared in court Tuesday on charges including fraud, corruption and money laundering for the $6.5 million awarded to company On Point Engineering for road services in Limpopo province. They were granted a bail of $5,000 each.
'Murder on a massive scale': Angry fallout from S. Africa mine shootings
A draft of the charge sheet says benefited from the tender and used it to fund a farm that cost nearly $500,000 and to make a payment for a luxury car.
Last week, police surrounded Malema and threatened his arrest when he arrived at a stadium to address striking mine workers who were meeting to vote on a wage deal. Malema was forced to leave before addressing the crowd of thousands.
Nearly six weeks of strikes by workers at the platinum mine saw violence that killed 46 people.

Lynyrd Skynyrd members, from left, Johnny Van Zant, Mark "Sparky" Matejka, Rickey Medlocke and Gary Rossington perform during a "FOX & Friends" concert in New York in August.
By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor
To many above the Mason-Dixon line, the Confederate flag is a symbol of a divided country and an empathy with slavery and racism. To many below it, however, the "Rebel" flag is a symbol of unity, heritage and standing up for state's rights. To Lynyrd Skynyrd, it's all part of the band's brand -- good-time Southern rock ("Sweet Home Alabama") made by men with flowing locks and cranked-up guitars -- and it's made an appearance at virtually every one of their shows since they formed in the 1960s.?
But as band members learned recently, it's not so easy to lower the flag.?
It all started on Sept. 9, when three members of the band (Gary Rossington, Rickey Medlocke and Johnny Van Zant) appeared on CNN to discuss their new album, "Last of a Dyin' Breed." Toward the end of the discussion, interviewer Fredricka Whitfield asked about the band appearing to disassociate themselves from the flag.
"It became such an issue about race and stuff where we just had it in the beginning because we were Southern, and that was our image back in the'70s and late '60s ... but I think through?the years, people like the KKK and skinheads and people kind of kidnapped the Dixie or Rebel flag from the Southern and the heritage of the soldiers," explained guitarist and sole original band member Rossington. "We didn?t want that to go to our fans or show the image like we agreed with any of the race stuff or any of the bad things.?
That didn't go well with some fans; messages left on the CNN board indicated they felt that leaving the flag out of the routine was a slap in the face and kowtowing to political correctness. "By ignoring and denying the flag that is part of their history, they are leaving a large segment of their fan base behind," wrote G.D. Smith on the boards. "It's a shame that money is now more important than honor or heritage."
"We hope you never come back to 'Sweet Home Alabama,'" wrote another fan, L.E. Thompson.
Well, never let it be said that Skynyrd isn't responsive to its fans; last Friday, Rossington posted a message on the band's website to "clarify the discussion of the Confederate Flag" in the interview, writing:
"Myself, the past members and the present members (that are from the South), are all extremely proud of our heritage and being from the South. We know what the Dixie flag represents and its heritage; the Civil War was fought over States rights.
"We still utilize the Confederate (Rebel) flag on stage every night in our shows, we are and always will be a Southern American Rock band, first and foremost. We also utilize the state flag of Alabama and the American flag as well, ?cause at the end of the day, we are all Americans. I only stated my opinion that the confederate flag, at times, was unfairly being used as a symbol by various hate groups, which is something that we don?t support the flag being used for. The Confederate flag means something more to us, Heritage not Hate?"
And based on the comments left on the website following that post, this is an issue that remains still unresolved -- but many are backing up his decision to try and find a balance.
"I think all of us do well to let our conscience be our guide, and Mr. Rossington has given an example," wrote Walk In My Shadow.
And, added Toolbox, "Lynyrd Skynyrd is a true American band and are proud of their Southern heritage. Do you think for one minute that they would denounce their Southern roots?? Your wrong. Just listen to their music."

Should people who want to execute Wills and trusts go to a website that offers fill-in-the-blanks, generic, template legal documents or should they find a good estate planning lawyer? This is a question that the popular magazine and website Consumer Reports was intent on addressing and they took action to find the answers.
Consumer Reports really needs no introduction. It is perhaps the preeminent resource that we have for up-to-date, accurate, and unbiased information about products and services that consumers may be interested in. They endeavor to find out the straight story and they share it with their readers.
The magazine engaged the services of three very highly experienced, respected, and knowledgeable legal professionals. They asked these individuals to evaluate documents that were created using the online resources offered by three leading websites that offer do-it-yourself legal documents.
When it came to the last wills that were created the experts saw some flaws. It was possible to include contradicting causes, and the wording was not specific enough for their liking. They concluded that the wishes of the testator may not be completely clear when using one of these homemade documents.
After evaluating all of the findings Consumer Reports recommended that you go to a qualified lawyer any time you want to execute ironclad estate planning documents. They stated that only under the most elementary of circumstances could one of these documents possibly be acceptable.
This is what probate and trust lawyers have been saying ever since these types of websites emerged, but this independent confirmation should be enough to convince those of you who may still be skeptics.

The HSUS and Pig Farmers Allege Iconic Slogan was Sold Unlawfully to Fund Anti-Animal Welfare Lobbying Campaigns
The Humane Society of the United States?along with an independent pig farmer and on behalf of its pig farmer members?filed a lawsuit in federal district court, charging that the National Pork Board struck an unlawful backroom deal with a D.C. lobbying organization for the purchase of the iconic ?Pork: The Other White Meat? slogan. The deal allows $60 million in pork producers? money collected for marketing and promotion purposes to be diverted into industry lobbying efforts aimed at harming animal welfare and small farmers.
?The National Pork Producers Council has a failed track record when it comes to representing family farmers and preventing animal cruelty,? said Joe Maxwell, director of rural development and outreach at The HSUS and a Missouri pig farmer. ?While we can?t force NPPC to care about animals or family farmers, through this lawsuit we can work to stop our money from being unlawfully funneled straight to its lobbyists who work against us.?
The National Pork Board?a quasi-governmental entity receiving mandatory fees, called ?checkoffs,? from independent pork producers?purchased the slogan from its long-time industry ally, the National Pork Producers Council in 2006.
Through months of research, The HSUS uncovered glaring legal violations, conflicts of interest, and an exorbitantly over-inflated $60 million price tag associated with the deal. Much of the extraordinarily inflated value of the slogan resulted from 20 years of promotional campaigns funded entirely with pork producers? own checkoff funds: roughly half a billion dollars. In essence, NPPC charged pork producers twice: once to make The Other White Meat successful, and again to pay for the value of that success.
Launched in 1987, ?The Other White Meat? was developed as the primary promotional message of the National Pork Board?s checkoff program. According to federal law, every U.S. pork producer must pay into the checkoff program, but those funds can only be used for strictly limited promotional and research purposes, and may not be used for lobbying. The U.S. Department of Agriculture supervises the checkoff program and has authority to reject expenditures that are not in compliance with federal laws or regulations.
Records suggest that industry leaders were fully aware of the impropriety of the sale and deliberately worked to prevent public knowledge of it. Then-National Pork Board CEO Steve Murphy wrote in 2006, for example, that his reason for not accepting written appraisals for the sale was to keep that information ?sealed? and out of the ?public domain.?
The purchase price, to be paid by the National Pork Board to the National Pork Producers Council in 20 annual installments of $3 million each, has been reported by NPPC as representing nearly one-third of its annual budgeted revenue. These payments continue, despite the fact that the slogan has been discontinued and replaced with a new one by the National Pork Board, which has the power to cancel the payments.
The plaintiffs are asking the court to cancel the unlawful purchase and ensure that the remaining balance?tens of millions of dollars?will benefit the producers who fund the checkoff instead of NPPC?s anti-animal, anti-farmer lobbying agenda. The complaint does not challenge the constitutionality of the checkoff program but alleges a gross misuse of a massive amount of federally-compelled check-off payments funneled into lobbying purposes.

Today was quite fun, I was the first to arrive to class (as usual) and while I was a touch nervous there, I knew that I was in my element. We started off with gathering a few ingredients for my first class period, and since my teacher was both aware and very interested in my veganism he decided to give me a vegetarian recipe. It was for Asian Sesame-Soy noodles and sadly we didn't have a lot of the exact ingredients, but it is a very quick stir-fry dish so my partner and I went to work with finding ingredients for tomorrow's recipe. When he came around to check for?ingredients that he needed to buy and to suggest substitutions, I suggested mixing vinegar,?teriyaki?sauce,?brown sugar and molasses together for the missing dark brown sugar and?soy sauce. I hope it turns out well although I really don't?like sweet foods (surprising, huh?).?The next cooking class I had, I volunteered to make?some simple?naan bread and I?actually have to make naan?bread for someone else as well, tomorrow. So I am thinking that I should probably do all of the?preparation?(kneading, rising ect.), slice them into equal but separate pieces per each recipe and have the other girls grill them.?I may be using some?vegan ghee?from non-dairy margarine as well, with?cilantro for decoration. This food blogging has really?paid off!

LONDON (AP) ? Global financial markets drifted lower Monday as investors' growing concerns about the state of the global economy offset any remaining optimism over central banks' stimulus efforts.
Stocks have risen in recent weeks as the U.S. Federal Reserve and monetary authorities in other major economies announced measures to support economic activity. The European Central Bank unveiled a new plan to restore investor confidence in the government finances of the 17-country eurozone.
The latest indicators, however, suggest the global economy is still slowing down and will take some time to recover.
On Monday, Germany's Ifo index of business confidence fell for a fifth consecutive month, evidence that even the continent's largest and so far strongest economy is suffering headwinds.
"The reality of weak growth and underlying structural tensions is coming back to haunt markets," said Mitul Kotecha, strategist at Credit Agricole CIB.
By late morning in Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British companies fell 0.6 percent to 5,818.09 and France's CAC 40 dropped 1.3 percent to 3,484.89. Germany's DAX shed 0.7 percent to 7397.37.
Wall Street was poised to fall on the open ? Dow futures were down 0.4 percent to 13,450 while the broader S&P 500 futures dropped 0.5 percent to 1,444.90. Asian markets closed lower.
Looking ahead, Europe's debt crisis will remain a point of focus for investors. Spain is due to unveil a new series of cost-cutting measures and structural reforms that could pave the way for a demand for financial aid from its fellow eurozone countries.
Spanish stock and bond markets have been volatile in recent days as hopes that Madrid will apply for the aid alternated with concern that it was delaying the move.
On Friday, the country will also release a final estimate of the financing needs of its weakest banks. The figures will help the government determine how much of an existing ?100 billion ($130 billion) eurozone rescue loan ? earmarked for the banks ? it should use.
Earlier, Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index dropped 0.4 percent to close at 9,069.29 while Seoul's Kospi index was roughly unchanged at 2,003.44.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.2 percent to 20,694.70 while Sydney's ASX S&P 200 fell 0.5 percent to 4,385.50. Benchmarks in Singapore, Indonesia, New Zealand and India also fell.
China's Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.3 percent to close at 2,033.19, reversing losses earlier in the day. However, the benchmark is still at its lowest point since January 2009.
Chinese stocks are being hurt by a confrontation between China and Japan over disputed islands that have heightened tensions between Asia's two biggest economies.
They're also under pressure as investors worry about what Chinese authorities will do to restart growth amid the country's economic slowdown. Analysts say it's unlikely that Chinese authorities will unveil any major stimulus measures ahead of the National Day holiday next week or an expected but still unscheduled Communist Party meeting to hand over power to a new generation of leaders.
In currency markets, the euro weakened to $1.2902 from $1.2989 in late trading Friday while the dollar fell to 78.02 Japanese yen from 78.15 yen.
U.S. benchmark crude for October delivery was down $1.46 to $91.43 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 47 cents to settle at $92.89 on Friday.
